And its subsidiaries operate the world's second largest general-use car rental business, providing business and leisure customers with a wide range of services at more than 1,700 locations in the united states, canada, australia, new zealand and the latin avis is the very first organised car rental firm in the world. It was established by mr. Warren e. Avis in detroit in 1946. It reached a fleet size of 1200 in 1956.

In 1957 it has started expanding by opening the first licensee offices in san francisco, seattle and denver. After this period avis continued expanding both in america and europe. In 1962, the famous 'we try harder' slogan was introduced where avis has reached a fleet size of 7500 and a turnover of $25 million.

In 1965, avis has expanded to mexico, italy, nice and france and the turnover has jumped from to $74.5 million to $425 million. By the end of 1960' s avis was active in nearly 100 countries.

In 1976, they have recorded a turnover of $433 million with 112.000 fleet size. Being the largest car rental firm, avis already had around 3300 offices throughout world. These offices were located in more than 100 countries and 1200 airports. In 07 august 1974, avis was introduced to turkey by setur travel agency which was the member of ko holding group of companies where later on the merchant title was changed into setur rent a car.

Until 1980, the rent a car sector in turkey showed a very stable profile. Where after this date the great improvements and investments in turkish tourism sector has reflected the same performance to the rent a car sector as well. In 1985, avis turkey has enlarged with new vehicles both for self drive and imported luxury chauffeur driven where the office size has climbed up to 50' s, the fleet size to 1800 and 300 personnel. This enlargement was badly effected by the gulf war.

In 1991 avis turkey continued the improvements by having more franchise offices throughout the country. Using the advantage of changes in tax laws of turkey, avis reserved part of its fleet for lease rentals. In 1992 it became the leader of the sector in terms of sales, fleet and office size as well. This was mainly succeeded by renewing the fleet every year and having the advantage of working with a worldwide computer network called 'wizard' which was introduced in 1993.
